Ryan Duggan
NøMa: What was the inspiration behind this design?
RD: Well, I’ve always been interested in the
dynamics of social life. I was amused by the idea of pot and beer battling it
out for drug supremacy. It’s titled “Bout of Ages.” I originally drew a version
of this for a concert poster but it got turned down because someone in the band
was straight edge hahaha.

How did you make this?
Drew it on paper with a pencil and then I traced
that with a brush pen. I try to keep the computer use to a minimum.

As time goes on, your work is becoming more
hilarious, and at the same time, more simple and stripped-down.
Why thank you! Well, I went to school for
advertising for some reason and they always stressed getting your point across
as simply as possible and I’ve held on to that. That said, I enjoy leaving
little ‘holes’ in the story of a design for the viewer to fill in.

When will you stop skateboarding? Aren’t you like,
almost 30? Do you even have health insurance?
Trust me, I’m getting lazier and lazier but I
can’t stop now because I own a skateboard company–it would be bad for our
image. Also we are now making cruisers which is a skateboard specially designed
to carry ex-skateboarders to 7-11 to buy beer. Also, yes I have health
insurance. I even have renter’s insurance! I’m so banal.

Where are you located and why are you there?
Summer response: “Chicago, because I have yet to
find a better place.”
Winter response: “Chicago. I have no idea.”
Are there any artists that you’re
really into right now?
Favorites: Cody Hudson, Sonnenzimmer, Rachal
Duggan
How would you describe your style in five words or
less?
Only in it for money.

What’s your favorite joke?
“What’s red and yellow and looks good on
hippies? Fire.” –from the inner ring of a Shellac LP.
What else are you working on?
I just finished up the illustration for the
Flatstock #30 catalog/artist list thing. It’ll be distributed in the Flatstock
area of Pitchfork.
