J. Penry

NøMa: How did this drawing come about?
JP: I was in a coffee shop next to my house trying to sketch some stuff at a table. They played "Legend" twice in a row. I realized then that as important and talented as Bob Marley is, I never wanted to hear that CD again for the rest of my life.

Briefly, what was your process?
Its just Pen and Ink on paper, got the photo off Google Image Search. I kind of used L. Fulci's Zombie as a touchstone as well...

Humor seems to play a big role in your work. What are you most concerned with as you grow as an artist —finding a more distinct voice and being able to express a specific idea, or honing your craft and developing an aesthetic?
Making jokes and making fun of pop culture has always been the #1 driving force in my life to create work. I get better mechanically as I grow older and work more, but I'm not interested in art or artists that can't poke fun at themselves. I make stuff that makes me laugh, period.

Where are you located and why are you there?
New York City, for the record shopping.

Are there any designers/artists/brands that you’re really into right now?
WOWCH is always my fave. Go buy his stuff right now.

How would you describe your style in five words or less?
The World's Greatest.

What’s your favorite joke?

Whats the worst thing about blowing Willie Nelson? When the guy says "I'm not Willie Nelson".

What are you working on at the moment?
I've curated an entire summer's worth of free shows with my favorite local bands in the backyard of Union Pool in Brooklyn. If your in NYC this summer come by! Check out the event page here for more details. Also, I'm going to have a show of limited edition prints at Jen Mankin's amazing store, Bird in Williamsburg BK during fashion week in September.
