Elysse Ricci
What
was the inspiration behind this design?
When
I originally started working on this project there wasn't anything to
grasp onto because the parameters were so loose. I rarely get to work
like this, normally I have an extremely tight direction and predefined
expectations. I decided to take advantage of this and start with an
overall concept of design in its most basic form. I researched the
origins of Graphic Design and was lead to thinking about an obvious
format special to any typographer; the alphabet. After having a solid
idea and format and I moved forward with something I felt was smart and
supportive of this concept. Plus, I'm always down with a nice set of
glyphs. Customization
and a strong conceptual idea is what made working strictly with an
alphabet an interesting format for me. Research, research, research,
design.
What did you do on your recent trip to Italy?
I recently went to Italy and
studied typography in Venice and Rome with SVA's Masters Workshop in
Typography and then got hitched!
I was born, raised, went to school and work professionally in Philadelphia. Because it's awesome and the Phillies are here.

Are there any artists that you’re really into right now?
Music always fuels both inspiration and
process for me. I have a new playlist every other week, and normally am
stuck on one go-to song within my playlist. Newest design theme song?
Friends - Friend Crush. As far as design goes, I'm really interested in
patterns right now, so I've found myself being influenced by the
beautiful work of Anni Albers.
How would you describe your style in five words or less?
Informed.
What’s your favorite joke?
Probably every time I tell someone "listen, people think I'm funny."
What's next for you?
'The Works Shop' launching late 2011. Stay tuned!
