Script & Seal

NøMa: What was the inspiration behind this design?
S&S: We like to take ourselves out of our current modern day context, and we try to put ourselves in a different time or place that might be more fitting for the project or ideas that we have. So for this one, we tried to imagine how a really old Script & Seal flag might have looked. There's a lot of "mystery" involved in what we do, and we liked that this gave evidence to certain themes & ideas, however wasn't literal in any way. Some may see it as a composition, and others may try to create their own story from it. I think this is really what we're all about - not giving the answers, but providing interesting subject matter for people to create their own.

Briefly, what was the process all about?
Because we were envisioning this design as an ancient flag, we wanted to also give ourselves the same tools that people may have used long ago. So we kept it simple, and used simple brush strokes & dye.

Esoteric symbolism seems to be a predominant component within your work. How are you exploring this?
While we give some sources of inspiration later on, to be honest we go with our gut in everything we do. We don't search for answers, we create questions that we'd like the audience to answer. But at the very basis of things, and to give a definitive answer: symbols are intrinsically primitive and have such interesting history, so it's exciting to explore communication in the most basic of ways.

Where are you located?
We recently moved to Brooklyn, NY from Portland, OR. Part of why we moved is because we were both were raised in NY, but mostly because we really wanted to be completely immersed in this crazy creative scene going on here. We have a studio in the Pencil Factory in Greenpoint, which is an old pencil factory that has been converted to studios, and it's a truly inspiring place. There are so many talented creative people working here, not just for art, but there are a lot of bands who visit the recording studios downstairs.

Are there any designers/artists/brands that you’re really into right now?
We promise that this is unbiased -- one of our favorite bands is Nice Nice. We were lucky enough to do their album artwork for their first release with Warp records. They're really incredible, especially live. but besides them, we also like a good mix, bands like Neu!, Boredoms, Battles, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Lou Reed, Clint Mansell, and a bunch of others.

How would you describe your style in five words or less?
Strange, Anachronistic, Esoteric, & Artsy

What’s your favorite joke?
2 muffins are in an oven. One turns to the other & says "Ahh! It's hot in here". The other shouts "Ahh! A talking muffin!"

What are you currently working on?

We just finished up an exciting project with a really cool men's clothing brand, CXXVI. It's always ideal when you're working with a company that makes awesome stuff, but it's even better when the people who run it have great ideas & like to push boundaries.

Other than client work though, we're really excited about some new personal projects we've been working on. We're in the process of redoing our online shop, and have some new products. We're also working on a new project that focuses on studying/exploring some of our favorite subjects, which we will give more details about in the coming months.
