This week the Band of Outsiders Tumblr is posting a new Polaroid series of Rashida Jones wearing its Fall 2013 collection along with her sister, Kidada Jones. The series is just over half complete, with six of the ten photos posted as of this morning. From what we've seen already, namely the lo-fi film, elaborate headwear, and booths at The Dresden in Los Angeles, it looks like the collection has an Old Hollywood vibe.

You know that feeling when you see a great typeface on an old stove or a vintage book, and you can't do much to resist snapping a quick photo? Designer Jonathan Lawrence's Type Hunting Tumblr collects those impulsive images documenting anything from vintage marshmallow cans (?) to gas stations, and just about every foodstuff ever packaged with a great typeface. The majority of the posts feature bygone lettering, but sharp eyes can pick out modern brands that haven't updated in decades. Lawrence lives and works in Atlanta, so there's a good chance most of the artifacts were found in Georgia.
We've seen Jessica Walsh's art direction for Aizone before, but were never quite sure how the stunning images were made. It couldn't just be Photoshop, that was for sure. This new video shows us the behind-the-scenes action for the Aizone FW13 shoot, which is anything but the usual photo session. Walsh teamed with Anastasia Durasova for her can't-believe-it's-real body painting, which produces the vivid, colorful text on a model canvas.

The bizarre and dreamlike video for Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" was actually supposed to be much weirder. Kurt Cobain wrote the treatment for the Anton Corbijn-directed clip, but at some point it was tamed down for MTV and the like. The director's original cut was just released today in the run-up to the deluxe edition of Nirvana's In Utero.
From stand-alone sequences to transitions and even cover art, Terry Gilliam's cut-out animations were a major part of Monty Python films and television programs. In 1974, Gilliam was given about 15 minutes of airtime on BBC1's Do It Yourself Animation Show to talk about his craft. He gives a surprisingly thorough tutorial, managing to cover everything from finding source material and planning and photographing a sequence, to the mechanics of cut-out animation. His biggest takeaway, besides instructing viewers to not pursue animation, is that the simplest sequences are usually the most effective. [via SwissMiss]

Let's face it, most of us won't have our pad or second home photographed for Architectural Digest or even Dwell, but there's always good inspiration to be had from designed interiors. Taschen's third installment of Interiors Now drops next month and it looks packed with beautifully designed spaces for living. Some of which, Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan's Shelter Island pad for instance, provide for that kick in the pants to get your own joint up to snuff, if not ready for a photoshoot. The spots are written up by Ian Phillips, editor-at-large for the German Architectural Digest.

Saturdays Surf is making moves to establish a rep as a well-rounded lifestyle brand, not just a surfer's cult fave. For fall, the New York City-based label is offering something for every climate. T-shirts, board shorts and swim trunks remain a mainstay, of course, but Saturdays is now offering a choice selection of outerwear, knitwear, and footwear.
The fall line offers simple, functional pieces for fall layering—nothing too elaborate here. Standouts include a nautical-styled cable knit sweater, a poplin-lined bomber jacket, a colorblocked oxford, and a waxed canvas desert boot. Check out some of our favorite looks below.

Back in November of 2012, a mysterious illness took Marissa Paternoster and Screaming Females off their touring schedule for a few months. Instead of a press release or a tweet canceling the dates, Paternoster drew a comic strip explaining the illness, and her confusing treatment, and posted it on the band's blog.
Almost a year after that health scare, Paternoster is drawing memoir comics again, but this time around they're about her personal history as a music fan and not mysterious illnesses. So far, both of her comics have read like great character studies, with a special attention paid to how the subject influenced the soundtrack.
Marissa Paternoster's comics appear periodically on the Talkhouse, a new site that features musicians writing about music. She's written about CRASS and addiction, and her family friend Bob and the All Girl Summer Fun Band. Check out a few panels below.
If there's a better way of telling Dikembe Mutombo's life story than through an animated version of the hoops star, we can't think of it. To mark the re-release of Mutombo's signature adidas basketball sneaker, illustrator Nathan McKee and animator Jamal Qutub created a web series called "The House of Mutombo" following the eponymous protagonist from his early days in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to his finger-waving notoriety in the NBA. Mutombo narrates the series. The clips are only about a minute each, but myth making doesn't take much longer than that with original lettering, charmingly 2D animation, and an inexplicable hawk that pops up in episode two.
Check out the first three episodes and some images from the series below.
Loyal readers know we are big fans of American outdoors brand Filson here at Nothing Major. Our recent tour of the new HQ and factory only fed our obsession. So we're especially jazzed about the fall collection that just hit. In it, Filson expands its offerings in luggage (more styles and fabrics) while adding some clothing with modern cuts and materials, all built to last a lifetime. We've selected seven items from the new collection we're jazzed about. As for you heritage buffs, you'll be sated too, when Filson drops an archival collection later this month.
1. Short Lined Cruiser Jacket, $295: The Soy Wax construction makes it water resistant and lends it a nice crackled look. The modern trimmer fit is shorter, too. It comes in tan w/ black and red Alaskan plaid lining or in black with dark green flannel lining. Possibly your new second skin?
2. Quilted Vest, $260: Feel free to move around with this water resistant outer shell. It comes in Navy and Orange, both with that great tan contrast pocket detail.
3. Original Sportsman Bag, $360: Filson's best-selling hunting jackets and vest inspired this practical bag. The large main compartment features snap out panels so you can organize it your way. Constructed from 22 oz. Rugged Twill and 12.5 oz Oil Finish Tin Cloth, it comes in Tan/Dark Tan and Tan/Otter Green.
4. Guide Pants (Shelter Cloth, $240 & Soy Wax, $265): These rugged pants are ready for almost anything nature has to offer. Available in the new soy wax, they feature front cargo pockets with one-hand snaps.
5. Tote Briefcase, $360, and Game Bag Messenger, $285: Just what we needed: traditional construction but ready for the city. Both bags use Filson traditional 22 oz Rugged Twill and 12.5 oz. Oil Finish Tin Cloth plus heavy duty brass zippers and pulls and genuine bridle leather.
6. Rugged Twill Log Carrier, $80. You'll never gripe about hauling firewood again with this handsome number at arm's reach.
7. Leather Belt, $58: Don't consider this entry-level Filson. It's constructed in Seattle of genuine saddle leather, the type of belt you pass down to the next gen.
