We love the level of detail on the Greats site. Here's the Wilson broken down.

We've been following the Greats Brand hype on Instagram for a minute, so we're thrilled to finally see the online shop go live. Greats is a direct-to-consumer men's footwear company promising us a high quality shoe at a fair, even "disruptive" price—no middleman, you see. Greats's site says its shoes are designed in Los Angeles, handmade in Leon, Mexico from materials from Tokyo with some soles originating in Italy—and, might we add, to be worn by influential #menswear bloggers in NYC. Greats sells The Wilson (a canvas lowtop, available in red, white, and blue) for $59 and The Royale (a deerskin upper sneaker with Italian Margam sole available in grey, brown, and black) for $99.

The Greats is live and taking pre-orders. Our advice is to order soon as Greats predicts a sell-out.

 

Like us, you've seen that Bleu logo showing up on one of your chums around town and you're curious about Bleu de Paname. Well, now is the time to pop. 'Know thyself' is a good mantra for an influential label such as Levi’s. The brand’s iconic 501 jean turns 140 this year, and the classic shrink-to-fit jean is as relevant a style today as they were back in the 19th century.

If one needs to study up on the history of the 501, this video below and pdf are a good place to start. But Levi’s is putting out all the stops to commemorate the 501’s 140th year anniversary. It’s taken the campaign a step further with a neat timeline on the Levi’s Vintage Clothing site.

LVC has done a fine job in releasing special reissues of every 501 model over the years, but the Historic 501 Timeline is the first time all that information has been offered in a nice visual package. And it’s a lot of information. Each LVC 501 jean is made using Cone Mills denim to the exact specifications of its original model—from fit and hardware all the way down to the labels and packaging.

The illustrative timeline begins in 1890, the year Levi’s patented its riveted jeans (from 1873, the 501s were known as XX), and goes on to chronicle all the models up until 1978. It’s filled with all kinds of useful archival tidbits, marking the introduction of belt loops in 1922, the first time the now-famous red tab was sewed on in 1936 or when kids began calling them “jeans” instead of “overalls” in the 1950s.

Just when you thought the Clarks iconic desert boot couldn’t get any more desirable, it went ahead and tapped Chicago’s Horween Leather for a refreshing upgrade. 40 is the new 20. Patagonia is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a fall collection consisting of the the outfitter’s most iconic pieces reinterpreted. Dubbed the Legacy collection, the 10-piece capsule is set to release in September and features some clean, sharp pieces that pay homage to founder Yvon Chouinard’s function over fashion design philosophy.

Michael Williams over at ACL shared a few side-by-side comparisons of select items with the original archival pieces from which they were based. Standouts include the All-Wear Down Jacket, Diamond Quilt Snap-T Pullover and the Summit Pack.

Some are surely dealing current heatwave across the States by getting wet and staying wet as long as possible. Pools, lakes, rivers, oceans, anything watery will do. With our old trust swimsuit fraying, the new swim trunks from Choctaw Ridge have arrived just in time. A recent article on Bangladeshi textile factories noted that only about 5.5% of clothing sold in the U.S. is made in North America, much less in the U.S. itself. That might be shocking to those of us hopeful about the resurgence of American-made menswear as an option in the marketplace. It is, truth be told, a very small movement. So, while we we were in the process of rounding up our favorite American-made items for summer, we noticed some of our favorite online shops were flying the flag for made in the U.S.A. goods this week. Here's a starter list if you're feeling strongly about supporting American garment and goods today and don't mind celebrating the Fourth by excercising your right to charge something to plastic.

The Made in USA Boston brand carries sturdy summer Oxfords of its design as well as Tellason denim and Ghurka bags. And it gets its name from a George Washington instruction to the army during the American Revolution. If you're feeling sorry for their Stanley Cup loss, by all means, order something extra.
